The Challenge

The bridge had to span a major river and existing road intersection with minimal disruption. Pre-stressed concrete requires precise tensioning and curing — any error compromises the entire structure. The state also required that the existing road remain open throughout construction.

The Solution

NOTGATE used incremental launching for the bridge deck, pushing segments across from one abutment while maintaining traffic below. Pre-stressing cables were tensioned using computer-controlled jacks to ensure uniform force distribution. The river piers were founded on caissons sunk through 12 metres of alluvium to bedrock.

Project Impact

The bridge reduced inner-city transit time by 35% and has handled over 50 million vehicle crossings with zero structural issues. It won the Nigerian Society of Engineers' 'Infrastructure Project of the Year 2019'. 35% transit time reduction.
